The long and short of it is that the car owners "own" the rights of the number their car bears. when Rudd left RYR to drive for the Wood Bros, Yates signed E Sadler to drive his second car. In signing Sadler and MM's as his primary sponsor the car number was changes to 38 (mm's was on K Shrader's 36 the season before). Texaco/Havoline jumped to Ganassi's (new) 42 team.Harvick drives the 29 because it was the first number available that DID NOT have a three in it( by choice of Richard Childress)The bottom line is that some numbers come and go mostly to the whim of marketing a team or sponsor .

they didn't change the # to 42, they changed it to 38, and elliott sadler is driving it. texico havoline switched their sponsership from robert yates racing to chip ganassi racing.davey allison died a day after a helicopter crash that caused davey severe head injuries
