Actually a downpipe is the section between the engine (or turbo housing) and catalytic converter. Factory downpipes are often restrictive due to packaging and cost considerations, so an aftermarket downpipe can increase flow and power.

down pipe is a pipe that ends behind the muffler that just bends down. usually because 3 in exhaust cant be bent over the rear axle because of kinking and the they cut off a down spout after the muffler straight down
