I really like it! I bought a 2005 530xi (black Sapphire, black leather) wagon because it was cheaper than the X5 but got better milage, almost equal in cargo space, and it looks 10x nicer. If you live north of the Mason-Dixon line, I'd recommend getting one with all-wheel drive. The wagon only comes in AWD, but if you're looking at the sedans, then go for anything ending in "xi". The 550 is very nice and fun to drive, but it's $9k more than the 530i and doesn't come with AWD. IMO, the 530xi is the best deal available. The 3.0L is a good balance of power and milage. The V-8 has plenty of kick, but might be overkill. Besides, AWD only comes with the 6 cylinder. I don't like the iDrive. Make sure you get the manual tranny. The auto is a little sluggish.Unless you're German or own part of BMW, I'd still shop around. My co-worker bought a 2005 Acura RL which I thought was very comparable and it has a better nav system. The only other cars I would compare it to is the Audi A6 and Saab 9-3. I would test drive all of these before you settle on the BMW.
I don't have a 5 series of my own, but my ex's step dad has one and I drove it a couple times. A 2002, I think. It's an awesome car to drive - I've driven several nice cars and this is probably the most fun. The only problem is that I'm tall (6'3") and didn't find it to be the most comfortable - the seat didn't go back quite far enough. Maybe this is changed for the new version.
