Why does England and former British Colonies drive on the left side of the road?

What's tougher a F-150 or a Ford Escape?

Firstly it is Britain/UK not just England :-)

Driving on the left is generally considered to be a historical leftover from horse mounted knights riding on the left so as to keep sword arm free - other classes had to stay to the right. Any colony would have rules that matched those of the Crown.

I have a vague recollection of hearing that the European convention to the right is to be opposite from a system that was based on social class.

I guess the correct answer is that it had to be one side or another - the UK is an Island so there would never be a problem at a border. In mainland Europe or North/South America/Canada everyone would have to standardise or there would be complete chaos at border crossings.

Just my 5 Euro's worth :-)

Can anyone tell me the dimension of the width opening of the 2006 Honda Fit? I would like to know the widest.?

It goes way back to the era when horses were the main transportation. Being of that the majority of people are right handed, when "driving a horse" the riders would "steer" with their left hands freeing up their right hand for fighting, etc. This proved especially usful when riders would travel on the left side of the road, so they could acheive the best attacking position when armed.

All former British colonies don't drive on the left. The provinces that make up Canada were once colonies and we all drive on the right. The small former colonies no doubt drive on the left because the cars they imported were from Britain as opposed to America. Many parts of Europe drove on the left until the second war.
