What bikes are used in the dakar rally, and what do they cost?

Question:what are the costs of the whole rally.
Are there a choice of bikes that are used or is one preferred and what modifications need to be made

KTM seems to be the preferred bike for the Dakar Rally, but there are usually a few Honda and Yamaha bikes entered and, last year there were a couple of Bombardier bikes.
An educated guess says a race-ready bike would probably cost at least $15,000, maybe more and to do the rally, the minimum budget would be around $25,000.
An acquaintance ran in the rally several years ago (once on a bike and one in a car - he didn't finish either time) and I'm basing my estimates on information he gave me.
