Do you feel there should be a salary cap in the MLB?
If it is a league with a slide or avoid contact rule then you have found a loophole whith that rule.Although the runner did not slide he did avoid contact but use this idea. In high school when a player is in fielding/tagging position it is illegal to jump over or hurdle him. He is called out and ball remains live.
My recommendation is get with the other umpires in this league and hash it out and come to a concensus thought.
PS -- I would have called him out on safety grounds b/c he is risking injujry to himself and the catcher.
Why can't MLB schedule games better during the first two weeks of april?
Runner is safe, base lines go east and west. Nothing prohibits them from going over an attempted tag. However, if your umping in a down or out league, the runner would be out for not sliding.Who Is A Better Closer - Rivera or Hoffman?
You blew it because I've seen guys in the Majors go up, over, and under catchers in order to tag home. I would have liked to seen that play it must have been spectacular.I've seen similar plays in MLB and runner was safe. After all, Joe Carter wasn't called out for abandoning the base paths when he jumped around them after that WS-winning HR in '93.
Now, I'm not an umpire, but I'm obviously giving you what I've seen, based on the calls of the best umpires around.
Does the league you're dealing with allow appeals of games? After all, this is not about your judgement but about your application of the rules. If so, this one might be played again, from that point forwards. Just as was the pine tar bat game.
What does the stats WHIP, BB, and BAA in baseball mean?
way to go Dieker you blew another game. Better pray they didn't protest because it will get overturned.Well, it depends on the rules of your specific league, but going by MLB rules, I'm sorry to say, you blew the call.
If the catcher did not have possession of the ball when the baserunner jumped over him, then the baserunner should have been called safe, as the catcher would have been obstructing the runner's path.
As per rule 7 of MLB's official rules, a runner is considered safe if he or a teammate is not in violation of of sections 7.07, 7.08, or 7.09.
"Jumping" is a legal baserunning maneuver as evidenced by a player who jumps to avoid a batted ball. In "tag" situations, jumping can be considered comparable to a headfirst slide.
Added in response to your edit:
In a slide (or "down or out") rule league, you made the right call, since the baserunner committed obstruction by failing to slide or go around. The intent of this rule is to avoid injuries to players, and a baserunner attempting to "jump" another player is clearly increasing the risk of injury.
How can i improve my arm strength for baseball??
well im pretty sure in little leauge the runner would be out. i know for sure they would be safe in the MLB but since its a little league game you made the right call. for one thing its endangering the safety of the players so it can be considered the same thing as plowing a catcher in little league which is not allowed. so i say you made the right call.in little league... the runner would be out becasue that happened to me also and i got called out but in mlb its legal to do so i belive tho..but not in LL
He is safe. He never left the running lines, just up and over.
What happened to Brian Daubach?
Technically, the runner can hurdle a fielder, but does your league have a rule where the runner can only slide or go into a base standing up. The baseline is defined, but is not contingent on a runner going airborne.it is where the person is on the field to avoid the tag.Does anyone know who won the recent baseball series?
As long as he is in the base path he is safe if he is not tagged! I have seen this several times in the big leagues!More Questions & Answers...
