How successful are submarine pitchers?

Question:i was wondering how far submarine pitchers go in terms of D1 college and pro. i've been working on submarine pitching and i have better control than throwing overhand, i just need to work on velocity. what are the chances in succeeding at this pitching style. i know johnathon papelbon's bro is a sub and got drafted. here's a picture of how low i try to go.

What is the address of the Pittsburgh Pirates?

We see so few b/c coaches don't normally teach it. Some may even be at a loss to try to coach some of your mechanics. Many even discourage it all together. However, in the end you must do what works for you.

Succeeding? No better or worse than any other delivery. In the end it boils down to throwing strikes and keeping the hitters off balance. If you have the location, movement, and mix up your speeds, then you can do a lot even if you are pitching from between your legs.

Aside from Quisenberry, I automatically think of Kent Tekulve as well - they were out at the same time and two of the best at the time. Though the Quiz was hands down the better of the two.

Who was better Ted Williams or Roberto Clemente?

several have been succesful as relief pitchers in the bigs. There are currently a handful- Jeff Nelson has been a reliable set up guy that comes to mind. My fav and probably the most sucessful was Dan Quisenberry of the Royals. If you submarine, expect to be a reliever though- and the key is to learn to throw in multiple arm slots- it changes to way your pitches will move. Best of luck

Do you think the twins will make it to the finals?

that picture is crazy. I remember BK Kim was a submarine pitcher, but almost lost the world series for the d-backs in 2001. He was still awesome cause of the way he pitched.

Are there any baseball leagues in Louisiana for adults? I'm 26 and would love to be able to play.?

That pic as you know, is of Chad Bradford who played for the Mets last year. He signed a great contract with the Orioles because he was part of the reason the Mets had the best bullpen in the majors last year.

I think Boston has or had a korean named Kim who won a World Series with the Diamondbacks and 20 years ago the Royals had a fantastic reliever named Dan Quissenberry who may end up in the Hall some day. So submarine pitchers can go as far as their subs will take them.

They say the most important thing in pitching is to be comfortable with how you throw and if the submarine style works for you - GO FOR IT!

and good luck!

Whos the worst baseball team this season?

I believe Kent Tekulve is the most famous submarine pitcher of my time. He was a reliever with the Pirates for 15 years from the mid '70's to the late 80's. His career ERA is 2.85. Not bad!

When we consider that pitchers try to keep the ball down and as a submariner it's hard to get the ball up, to me it's a good way to go. Yet, you almost never see submariners. I assume that it's largely because it is so unorthodox. No dad is going to teach his kid to throw that way, is he?

At the end of the day, though, it doesn't really matter from whence you release the ball. Johnny Bench said a long time ago that there are three elements to successful pitching:

1. Velocity
2. Movement
3. Location

He went on to say that NO PITCHER can be successful in the big leagues unless he can consistently accomplish two of the three. So, FORGET the question of where you release the ball and ask yourself ... do you have velocity? If not, do you have movement? Can you hit your locations? If you can't then you'll probably not be very successful, submarine or no.

See you in the bigs!

Where can i find New Era 59-50 LOW PROFILE hats?

I think one of the major reasons submarine and sidearm pitchers have done so well is because there have been so few of them. The ball is released from a completely different spot than where the hitter is accustomed to picking it up. Accordingly, the hitters aren't very comfortable and have less time to get a beat on the ball. If you can do it comfortably and still have the fundamentals (location, velocity, movement) it will certainly give you a leg up on the competition.
