Minor League umpire's are assigned to cover leagues, not individual teams.Any person wishing to become a Major Lg umpire must attend one of the 2 recognized schools, run by former umpires, in Florida, at the expense of the potential umpire.
If accepted after graduation, an umpire is assigned to a short-season rookie league. and advances up the ladder from there depending on various factors such as knowledge of the rules, application of the rules, and his ability to control the game's numerous situations.
Once assigned to a league, the umpire never pays for his hotel room and umpires receive a travel reimbursement for their transportation costs. They do receive a salary, which is also paid for by the league.

They don't pay for it. Just like any other job, if your traveling either the league pays for it, or they are paid an amount besides their regular pay, ( such as per diem) and can chose where they stay. Two different umpires could be on different plans and work together, just depends on their contract.
