Mark Shapiro is the son of a sports agent who has represented athletes like Cal Ripke, Tom Brady,etc. Shapiro graduated Princeton. He is the brother in law of Eric Mangini of the NY Jets. Shapiro got with the Indians in 1992 -under the wing of John Hart. Shapiro was said to be the one who talked John Hart into signing young guys (at the time) like Jim Thome,Sandy Alomar,Manny Ramirez,Kenny Lofton into multi-year deals before they broke out and became big stars. This was done in 1995. Shapiro uses the same philosophy in signing Sizemore,Peralta,Sabathia,Mart... and Hafner currently. I know Shapiro is best friends with the New England Patriots GM and brings him in to speak to his players about teamwork and chamiponship attitude. A couple of years ago Shapiro was named MLB executive of the year. Deservingly so. Mark Shapiro is one of the brightest and most creative GM's in all of baseball working with a small market and a small payroll. Hope I was able to help.
