An excellent question. All that I can offer as part of the answer is that his consecutive innings streak ended after the 7th inning on Sept 14, 1987, in Toronto.

This was the game in which Blue Jays ended up hitting an MLB-record 10 HR's. Senior sent Ron Washington in to play short in the bottom of the 8th. The next day, Billy Ripken jumped for a line drive at 2nd, came down awkwardly on the bag, and tore a ligament in his ankle.
