Guys? How many times have you seen guys not straddle/tag 2nd base on some of these double plays?
Question:Are the umpires really paying attention?
I’ve seen at least four game this year where the guy covering second doesn’t even come close to touching second base.

Why are the Boston Red Sox wearing green tonight?
yeah, I've seen that many times. You get mad when someone from the other team doesn't step on the bag and just dances around it but in reality, it goes both ways to help your teams, and all 2nd basemen/shortstops do it. As long as you are close and the ball is securely in the glove, it'll count as an out. These guys are professionals. They get away with a lot more then they should. Its kinda like the traveling violation in the NBA. I understand where ur coming from but it is kind of necessary to make the play.
all the time, The unwritten rule is as long as your close it wil count..Fair or not this is how it is
Its a safety issue, its kinda like good sportsmanship between teams. It basically protects the second baseman or the shortstop, which ever one is covering. Umpires understand and basically acknowledge it as that.
The reason it is a safely issue is back in the 40's and 50's many of those players covering second base got broken ankles or feet when hit by the guy sliding into second. So teams have gotten together and now allow this to happen all of the time.
What's the fastest way to break in a new baseball glove?
actually, thats one of the trics of the trade. my select team coach, who used to play infield in the pros said that second basemen and shortstops rarely ever touch the bag while turing a double play. it usually just slows them down and they make a wild or slower throw than they usuall would. umpires r aware of this but give fielders the call anyways. besides with a runner sliding cleats high does it really matter if they touch the bag? i would just want to get away from the spikes. If you could come up with a new type of pitch in baseball, what would you want it to do?
Yeah I know. Some of them just kick the dirt to make it look like they they tagged it.as long as the throw is true without the fielder having to stretch for it it is an easy call to make. From experience, it is taught and expected to be called that way AT THAT LEVEL OF PLAY!
If the fielder butchers it all bets are off. I would not want Prince fielder bearing down on me if I am David Eckstein.
HOW WELL do you know baseball?
It has been happening for so many years now. It is assumed that as long as the fielder is close the runner is out.Why do MLB games start at 1:05?
It is called a visinity rule. Sorry about the spelling. As long as you are near the bag it is an out.More Questions & Answers...
