They were once also called the California Angels and just plain Anaheim Angels. Give it time, and hey will be known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in California's Metro District.It is too many words. They don't need that many. I just refer to them as the L.A. Angels.

It was a ploy to try to get more fan base in Orange County and Los Angeles County. The ownership thought they might market better if they add both names in the team name. Frankly, I'm not sure what they're trying to do, steal away Dodger fans? Yeah right. You really want to market well in Anaheim to an L.A. fan base? It's a pretty stupid name, but there's really no good answer for "The Angels".The Angels' fan base covers dozens of small cities with no city being truly dominant... People living in suburbs of Phoenix, Boston, Seattle or most major cities, can just affiliate with the Metropolitan area.
But Orange County (the county the Angels play in) doesn't really have one major city; it's comprised of dozens of equally small cities. Collectively the cities are a large metro area, but residents generally refer to Orange County as their place of residence. Few Angels' fans are form "Anaheim proper" or associate themselves with Anaheim.
They could be the "Orange County Angels" but that's not much better than their current name, and about 1/3 of the fan base lives in the "Inland Empire" (neither Orange County or LA). The Inland Empire is basically affordable housing in So Cal because Orange County and LA are ridiculously expensive. So they can't be the Orange County Angels as that would turn off the Inland Empire fans.
LA is the largest city close to Orange County, but Orange County is anything but a suburb of LA and residents want nothing to do with LA. The two areas are very different culturally; they're about as opposite as you can get. Arte Moreno (Angels' owner) changed the name to increase advertising revenue, but I doubt he understood the cultural divide between the two areas.
They were the California Angels, but that's even more vague... it could be Sacramanto, Bay Area? So that's out too.
So that's covers just about all the names they've ever had, and none of them really fit. They should just be "The Angels" and let it lie.
