What does the GB stand for in Baseball?

Question:what does it mean??

Answers:

Andy Pettitte returns, welcome home...?

GB = Games Behind.
It shows how far a team is behind the leading team in the standings.
For a team to move up in the standings, it would take that team to WIN a certain number of games while at the same time the leading, or First Place team LOSES the same amount of games.
For each combination of a WIN by the GB-Game Behind team and a LOSS by the First Place team...the difference in the standings would be ONE GB or Game Behind and the GB number would be reduced by ONE.

Oh and btw...just for those who wonder how can a team be let's say, 3 "1/2" (or 3.5) games behind? and where does the one-half come from?
If BOTH teams play on a given day and the leading team wins while the (GB) team loses, that accounts for one, full game (1.0)
If only ONE of the teams plays on a given day and wins or loses, that will count for one-half (1/2) of the standings (1.5 or 1 1/2 games) and the standings will be adjusted accordingly.

Example of Standings showing GB (Games Behind):

NL EAST 2006 (FINAL) STANDINGS
TEAM..W.L.GB
Mets....97..65..x
Phillies...85..77...12.0
Braves....79..83...18.0
Marlins....78..84...19.0
Nationals...71..91...26.0
