Have you ever heard of this? When I was a kid in the early 60's we played a bizarre kind of baseball.Read on
Question:We frequently played this game when there weren't enough kids around for a real game. We only needed 2 players per team, more would always be better. With 2, the fielding team would suppy a pitcher and a fielder. The batter was required to say which field, left, centre, right, he would hit into and the fielder would play there. If the batter hit into another field, he was out. With 3 per team, the batter would state which of 2 fields he would hit into. With 4 per team, there would be 3 fielders and the batter wouldn't have to say. There was no actual base-running, this was all theoretical. There were many arcane rules which determined what was a single, double, etc. I remember that when we we small, hitting a fly ball into the grass of the outfield was a home run. Later, when we all could hit that far, the rule was changed so that a fly ball hit over the fielder's head was a homer. I have met people from all over Canada and no one has heard of anything like it. Have you?

We were like Bud Selig, in a way, I guess.
We just made up rules to suit our desires!
Who is a better centerfielder? Andruw Jones or Jim Edmunds?
no, I can't say that I have...sounds like a good idea though!Whats the difference between ST+20 alloy and MeC 35 alloy?
Thats not that bizarre. I live in PA and played something similar to that as a youngster.Where can I get cheap parking for a Red Sox Game?
I've heard of people play It like that. 100 years ago, that's how they played.I know of people who would adapt game rules to the number of players. Hitting to empty field to make an out is pretty common amongst kids.
I have a twin brother. We brought baseball into a soccer playing neighborhood. When it was just the two of us, we would play curb-ball, a game our father taught us. The batter throws the ball against a wall, curb or pitchback trainer and tries to get the ball by the fielder. Anything that got by the fielder below the knee was a single. Between the knee and waist was a double. Between the waist and should was a triple. A passed ball over the shoulder was a home run.
With three, four or five people, we would play hot-box: chasing baserunners between two or three bases. When a runner got out for the third time, he'd put on a glove. The fielder who got him out last would start running the bases.
With six we could play a normal game. Our back yard had thick trees about 180 feet from home plate. Barry Bonds couldn't hit a homer there. We never had to worry about restricting certain fields. I think it made us better fielders and hitters though.
The great thing about baseball is its adaptability. Dontrelle Willis developed his leg kick to deceive the one friend of his that would play baseball. There are hundreds of stories about Latino players using bottlecaps and other items as balls.
What are the best seats at Fenway Park?
No.But we played a game identical to that in our neighborhood though.
What stupid things do baseball announcers say??
No, but it sounds like fun. I played in a similar game with my brother and if not him, with a friend. In that case there were only 2 players, one on each team! We used a whiffle ball so we could put "stuff" on our pitches. Same rules almost. Past a certain point was a single, past another was a double and so on. The bigger guys (my brother for a good while) had to hit it farther. As we grew and got more close in size and ability the rules changed and we each had to hit to the same place. It was really a game of pitching and hitting. Often, we narrowed the field so to be fair the ball had to pretty much go up the middle. This way we had a fielding component to the game. If you caught the ball on one bounce or on the fly it was an out. If we were lucky and there were three of us at one time -- then we had three one man teams with two playing in the field at any one time trying to get the third guy out. Then we took turns being at bat.Baltimore Orioles fans..Is it hard to scalp tickets to a big game?
Very clever. But how could you keep track of where everybody was or was supposed to be: for instance Who's on First, What's on Second, and I Don't know on Third.http://susie1114.com/whosonfirst.html...
Did baseball really originate in america?
We country boys call that game "indian ball" and we play it all the time.We also play a game with a corkball bat and a tennis ball
We play on a fenced in tennis court and pitch for real with all kinds of different rules for singles and doubles and homers
Is there any plays in baseball where an out is recored, but no one gets credit for a putout?
I've never heard of that game...but we played a similar one where we drew a box on a wall for the strike zone and designated different parts of the field for single, double, etc.More Questions & Answers...
