Why is it that only one active player in MLB (the Yankee's Mariano Rivera) wears #42?

Not the 23 runs, but the only game I have seen in St. Louis, the Giants were the visitors. They scored early and often. The final score was 18-1 (McGwire homered). I bring this up to state that I was very impressed at how many Cardinals fans stayed through the eighth inning despite the onesidedness of the score. Almost none left earlier than that.
