Answers:

Team with 2nd most world series wins all time?

I would also agree that Rickey Henderson has to be considered the best of the best. Rickey would hit for a fairly decent average, but more important, all those walks.

Those walks and that batting stance was the thing that separated Henderson from Coleman. Coleman once said that he didn't believe there was a reason that he couldn't steal 200. Well, there was, 2 reasons in fact. 1) look out for that machine and 2) he couldn't draw walks.

Rickey Henderson would put all the attention on him while he was on the basepaths, he probably increased the batters average by about 30 points.
He wasn't the absolute fastest at all, but he would study the pitcher's wind up and if he didn't get you on the first time on base, he would get you #2.

The fact that his record is so far away from the record he broke (1400+ to 938), is a testament to his longevity and expertise.

There simply won't be another base stealer in this generation of ball players for this reason. Money and fame.

When players get the big $$, develop power, prowess anything, the team that signs them are less and less likely to push them to run.

Alex Rodriquez, who did manage to steal 40 bases still has that ability, but he gets 15-25 and that's the season. 40-40 may have given him the name, but he is not going to risk damaging his stats by sliding into 2nd wrong.

When Reyes matures a bit, starts driving the ball more, you will see his SB #'s go down.

For another point on base running, Paul Molitor was among the smartest base runners around. Takes more than speed, but a knowledge of the game.

Which baseball team do you think will win the world series this year?

jOSE REYES will eventaully pass ricky

Do you think that it is a coincidence that Daryle Kyle and Josh Hancock both got killed at Wrigley field?

Nobody is better than Ricky

Rip cards pitcher?

Well if you go by numbers, Rickey Henderson is the best. But I think Jose Reyes has more speed than Rickey. Reyes also learned how to steal from Rickey. I don't think anyone will break Rickey's record, but Reyes is also a great base stealer. Vince Coleman was good too.

In baseball stats, what does the letters stand for, like k, what does it mean?

I'd be hard pressed to pick anyone besides Ricky. I mean, he took what was already an impressive career record and smashed it by about 50% more.

Maybe Vince Coleman for a few years before injuries and stupidity slowed him down. He could totaly change every game he was in with his baserunning. The Cardinals basically lost the '85 Series when Coleman got injured when he was run over by an automated tarpoline before the first game.

Joe Dimaggio or Willie Mays which would you want on your team?

Henderson said it best he is the greatest. His single season mark of 130 probably won't be broken not to mention his career mark of1406.

Who was the first dh in national league too hit home run in world series and american leage also?

reyes.

Why do the Los Angels Angels not show up on my scoreboard even though they are a selected team?

Ricky Henderson

Why are innings called innings in baseball?

Vince Coleman, in his heyday, he was the best, along with Otis Nixon, they didnt have the hitting ability of Rickey though, so thye didnt get as much PT, but I think if they were everyday players, they would have beat Rickey. They defenitely didnt have the staying power in MLB that he had, but they were fast, and smart.

Would you agree that Derek Jeter is the best shortstop in baseball.?

HA! Jose Reyes beating Rickey's career stolen base record is a joke. Last year, in his forth year Reyes stole a career high 64 bases; in Rickey's 4th year he over doubled that with an all-time record 130 SBs. After 4 years Rickey had 319 SB compared to 156 for Reyes...

Think of it this way: Reyes has stolen half the bags Rickey did in his first few years, if he's lucky enough to play as long as Rickey did and ends up with half of Rickey's 1406 Career Stolen Bases, he will still be in elite company.

Rickey was a cocky bastard, but he was undeniably "the greatest" He is so far ahead of the competition, it's ridiculous.

Other players have been faster (vince coleman, possibly Reyes and Ichiro) but nobody was as good at stealing bases, and able to keep it up.

Know any baseball chats, negative or positive, for example, hey batter batter...SWING?

Vince Coleman early in his career was unbelievably hard to stop. He's my pick. Tim Raines was a very smart runner. Ron LeFlore was pretty explosive. Rickey Henderson was too much of a hot dog for me to like. Brock, Cobb & others I never saw play. The running game just isn't the same today; teams rarely use it like they once did.

Who is the best Center Fielder of All Time?

The best all around player with base stealing prowless would be NON-STEROID USING Barry Bonds (only person to ever hit 500 Home Runs and Steal 500 bases)

Can a pitcher earn the win and the save in the same game?

Without a doubt Lou Brock. The stat did not carry any weight until Brock. Even though others had stolen bases it was not even considered an important stat until Lou stole 100, his SB's single handedly changed games and other teams feared him getting on base. Only then did people start to look at history about how many each player stole. The importance of taking an extra base came into view after Lou swiped his and established a record that "couldn't be beat". Up until then the home run was king, Henry Aaron was breaking Babe's record and the game was all about the power hitter. Ricky revived the SB as an art form and is a purist of the art. Which foot to move first, how low to start... most of the latter players you mention are just fast, and one no one mentioned was Vince Coleman. But a base stealer knows a pitchers moves and when to go. These days bases are stolen off of pitchers because they only care about the radar gun. That is what started the stat and what Brock brought to the game - give me an inch and i'll take 60 feet.

There are still a few people who understand the art of SB, Ricky was a student (and one of the best) but Lou was the best.

Could baseball in America be as big as it is without foreigner players?

Rickey Henderson-- over 1000 stolen bases

Who signed the new mets guy : Carlos Gomez?

ok i red it all, and theegori has the best argument,
and enormus from st. Louis , is a homer

P.S. because of mr. henderson pichters now invented the slide step so they could reduce their time to the plate, so they could have a chance in getting #24. as rickey would say "rickey see it all, rickey is the greatest ever."

Can anyone in the A.L deal with Boston and New York?

Bob Wickman.

Who is the biggest cheater in baseball history?

Lets not forget about Hanley Ramirez who at the end of his career will have a solid amount of stolen bases. The best I would have to agree with everyone else and go with Ricky Henderson

Who is going to Yanks game?

There is currently no player that will beat Ricky Henderson! Maybe after 25 seasons Hanley Ramirez, but for the next 25+ Ricky is the man.

Albert Pujols on steroids...?

I think its ozzie smith and ricky henderson

Why can't girls play in the MLB?

jackie robinson. no thought needed. he was by far the greatest. the dude stole home like it was no big deal.

Looking for youth baseball leagues in indianapolis?

Ricky Henderson by far. He stole 468 more bases than Brock and was only caught stealing 28 more times. His .401 OBP is going to make it incredibly difficult for anyone to ever break his record.

Do you think dice is ready for the mlb?

Ricky Henderson, definitely. Ty Cobb is only up there because he use to use to sharpen his cleats and jab opposing basemen (so they'd avoid him). He still was a great player, if not so nice.

Moises Alou 397 avg a fluke, or should the Giants have kept him?

Well, there are two former Dodgers who ought to be mentioned in this discussion. Jackie Robinson who played in an era when base stealing was not that important and who did not steal many bases could change the complexion of a game with his steals, especially the threat that he would steal home. I saw him (on television) steal home during the world series. Later while he was on third he completely rattled the pitcher by leading off and acting like he was going to steal. No one steals home very often, but Jackie was great at it.
Maury Wills was the person who reinvented the stolen base. Spmetime in the sixties he broke Ty Cobb's record for a single season. No one had even tried to steal that many bases for decades.
Ricky Henderson, however, is the greatest of all time. He may have been a jerk, but he could steal.
At the present I like Dave Roberts when he is healthy.
Thanks. I enjoyed the memories this question evoked.

This is the 3rd team in Washington DC. What happend with the first two?

Well you can definitely rule lou brock out. Ricky has 1406 steals to lou's 938 and he was only caught 28 more times. Ricky was caught stealing 335 times and lou 307. So i would go with Ricky Henderson with the only other person you can argue because of the way the question is worded would be Barry Bonds. The question is who is all time best at stealing bases, well ricky has more but bonds is gooooood. He has 510 steals with only 141 times being caught. Very remarkable. Ricky was only caught 24 percent of the time, Bonds 28 percent and Lou brock isnt even third with his 33 percent of the time being throwed out.

Do you think the Pirates will make the playoffs?

A good point was made by other posters, namely, that racking up big stolen base numbers wasn't done in the 50s, or really until Maury Wills stole 104 to break Cobb's record in '62. Lou Brock picked up Wills' mantle, so to speak. Guys like Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Ritchie Ashburn could have stolen a lot more bases if they had a mind too. The game just wasn't geared that way(tho' you wouldn't want to wear Willie out on the base paths 'cause he could hit 50 HR's). The best I can remember seeing were Ricky and Vince Coleman. Ron Leflore stole 97 one year, got caught 19 times; Omar Moreno stole 96 once, but got caught 33 times. Joe Morgan, Kenny Lofton, and Tim Raines all come to mind as well.

Who is your favorite Yankees player?

Maury Wills.
