Which umpire is in charge of making an infield fly rule call in baseball, the plate ump or the field ump?

Question:I am a coach for a high school baseball team and we had a play last night where the home plate umpire called an infield fly on a ball that did not get to the shortstop. I thought it was the wrong call and thought it should have been the field umps call. The home plate umpire said that is his call.

Either umpire may make the call but initially the rules book states it should be the plate umpire. That does not preclude the base umpire(s) from making the call.

It is the situation that makes an infield fly not the call. From your description, I cannot tell if any infielder could have caught the ball with ordinary effort and having not seen the play I cannot say yea or nay to the call.

Why is there such a huge Boston Red Sox following in Denver, CO?

The Field Ump calls it but the plate ump can override it

Why are the yankees all of a sudden wining?

I'm sure the field ump makes the call but the home plate umpire can overrule it. You'll probably be hearing from real umps on this one.

What baseball position should i play?

Hi
In answer to your question the plate ump has the call. But as the Umps work as a team, they both together to get the right outcome, an example of this is if the ball is hit up and the base ump raises his arm and points towards the ball in the air to help his partner out that is team work. So enjoy the game.

How do you spot a balk?

There is no limitation on which umpire calls an infield fly rule.
Once called though it is rarely, if ever overturned by the home plate umpire. Considering that the base runners are already applying the movement to the first call.

Am i really so offensive that i need to be eliminated ?

Do you think The San Diego Padres will win the division ?

home plate ump has this call. The field ump has to watch the runners, and therefore should not be focusing on the ball.

Either umpire can call it, but the plate umpire has the whole field in front of him and usually has the better perspective on this call.

And contrary to what other posters have said, no umpire can overrule another. The only time the plate umpire has authority over another umpire is when two umpires make different calls on the same play (they get their coverage messed up, for example, and two umps show up at second, one calling the runner safe, the other calling out); then the plate umpire can decide which call prevails.

It is against the rules for one umpire to seek to overrule the call of another. Rule 9.02(c).

Who was the only baseball player to be a member of both the Seattle Pilots and Mariners?

THe plate umpire rules fair or foul on infield ground balls, but the i've repeated seen the infield fly called by the umpire closest to the play. Was he closest to the play?

However, that's the Official rules, and they apply to professional baseball. Your league may vary on some details of the rules.

Did you protest the game? If your league allows protests, it would be on a misapplication of the rules, but never on an umpires judgement, and this would be an application of the rules.
