How come in baseball, when someone runs home, catchers go for the tag instead of just stepping on home plate?

like when we play in school, the catcher just needs to stp on the home plate with the ball, but when professionals play, the catcher tries to tag the players and most of the time the players slide in safely...so why dont catchers just step on the home plate with the ball?

How many home runs do you think a-rod whill hit this season?

Touching a base or plate to put someone out is only effective when there is a force play.

A force play occurs when the runner has to advance. For example, there is always a force play at first. If there is a runner on first, then there is also a force at second, because the runner on first has to advance to second to make room for the batter running to first.

The only time there is a force play at home plate is with the bases loaded. So with the bases loaded, a catcher can just step on the plate, ball in hand, to put the runner from third out. Otherwise, he has to tag the runner.

In school, you are playing with an "always force out at home" rule. It's common in amateur ball. Basically, as soon as the runner from third is halfway home, he has to continue home, and there is a force play at home. This rule is to avoid dangerous collisions.

Without the "always force out at home" rule, a runner can run back to third at any time.

Baseball tickets...?

If it isn't a force play at home, the runner might decide to turn around and go back to third.

I am a die-hard yankees fan and cant wait till clemens comes back.?

Often times there is not a force play at home, and if they just step on the base then the person is safe.

Was that a record yesterday?

because unless the bases are loaded, stepping on the plate isn't an automatic out; the runner has to be tagged before he reaches the plate

Who else thinks the yankees will miss the playoffs this year due to bad!! pitching?

Or they just want to feel like the Hero of the game..if only they knew that those of us who watch baseball don't care whether you tag them or step on the plate, an out is an out.

In baseball what does the term "no-decision" mean?

When they are FORCED to come home(people on first second and third) they can step on the plate, but when its the runners choice(no one on second or first) to steal home then you have to tag them.

Will jeff weaver be cut by seattle? his current record is 0-4 with era of 14.34!?

A dozen years ago, paleontologist Stephen Gould stated there would never be another .400 hitter. Was he right?

They can't just step on plate if bases aren't loaded. Runner always has to be tagged when coming home.

Would you drop Hideki Matsui for Jermaine Dye ?

because if it isnt a force out they need to tag the runner, if it is a force out they dont need to tag the runner

In regards to the luxury tax of MLB, where does the money go after being taken from the Yankees, Red Sox, etc.

Because they can only step on the base if it is a "force out". meaning that there is someone running behind them to third and therefore they are "forced" to go to home plate. Now if there is no base-runner behind them then the only way that the catcher can get them out is by tagging them with the ball.

Will the Los Angeles Angels win another game this year?

You can only step on the plate to get the out when it is a force situation.

Major League Baseball 2K7?

You can only step on the plate during a force play, bases loaded. Plus if your going for the tag with the ball as a catcher you should be blocking the plate, and that leaves the umpire no question as to wether you are out. If you cant reach the plate you can never be safe.

Is there any glaring mistakes in my lineup ?

In professional, if a catcher doesn't step on the plate it because its required to tag the player instead. If its a force out( a runner on every base), then the catcher will just step on home plate. If their is not a runner on every base before the pitch occurs, its not a force. The player must be tagged.

Softball question?

They can only step on the plate if its a force out. If there is no base runner forcing the runner home you have to tag the player instead of the plate.

WHich side is better? Aaron Rowand/ Dan wheeler or Rocco Baldelli/Jon Garland?

When the is a force play at home, the catcher if almost always step on the plate. But more times than not the play isn't forced and therefore, the catcher must tag the runner. It should be the same when you play in school, since that's the rules for all levels of baseball.

In baseball..what is an automatic ball.and what is a pitchout?

If it isn't a force play they have to tag the runner to record an out. More than likely in your situation they are using that rule to prevent injuries from a collision. In MLB there is no such rule.

Looking for MLB game that the umpire looked at the video tape to change a call on a home run... HELP!?

High school rules are the same as the pro rules when it comes to force plays. When a runner is forced to advance to home, the catcher need only touch home plate while having secure possession of the ball to retire the runner.

When a runner is not forced to advance to home, the catcher must tag the runner with the ball to retire the runner.
