They are making a big deal because what fought racism back then was baseball or Jackie so when people are declining it is hurting the national pastime that is why it is a big dealI've been asking the same question and was almost going to ask it on here but I guess you beat me to it. What everyone's said is right. But I also think people are making a big deal about it because it's not like there's always been this small a percentage of black players. From the 50s...all the way up to the 80s and maybe early 90s, there were loads of prominant premier black players in the big leagues: Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Dave Winfield, Tony Gwynn...the list goes on...But since the late 90s, the number of promising African American baseball prospects have declined tremendously. Today, most of our star players are of European, Latin-American, and Asian-American descent. This means that there are fewer and fewer black role models for kids playing baseball in the parks to look up to, and in turn fewer and fewer marketing opportunities for the Major League.
So, the big deal ultimately is about baseball resurrecting the once prominant African American market that it lost over the years to basketball and football.
