In the Dickson baseball dictionary, the story on "can of corn" seems to be that it comes from old grocery stores. Cans of corn were stored on high shelves and pulled down with a pole, a very easy trick for an experienced clerk.
The term "rubber match" comes from the game of bowls, and then picked up in the game of bridge. From there, it's spread to other sports.
Will Freddy Sanchez win another batting title this season?
Comes from the early grocery stores when most of the time corn was on the top row. Employees would come over with a stick and knock it off the shelf and catch it -- easily. Thus the saying, can of corn on a lazy, easily caught fly ball. As for the rubber match usually clubs will use there best pitchers to take the serious..thus leading to being called "rubber match"
