I don't know what price range you would consider expensive, but try to get a Canadian Maple bat. It is very strong and resists cracking much better than traditional wood bats. You can find them for around $50-60. Also, if you can't afford one of those, go for the original Louisville Slugger with a cup end, not a ball end. Then cup end bats are formed with power in mind, while ball ends are meant to be broken and are merely for practice.What are some quick and effective arm excercises to increase arm strength for throwing a baseball?

The better the bat, the more expensive it will be. there is a major difference in how well it hits. Professional are the best, at about $85. Then there is Professional Stock, at about $65. Below that, you never know what you will get.But -- congratulations on making the wise decision to get a wood bat! The great Rod Carew -- one of the greatest hitters in baseball -- wrote in his book "The Art and Science of Hitting," that the only way to practice is with wooden bats. It is much harder to master than aluminum, but once you can master the wood bat, of you do then use an aluminum one in a game, you will hit that much better. But, many schools are going to only wood bats, and soon the NCAA may ban aluminum, so a good wood bat hitter is that much more ahead. and since pro scouts could care less how you hit with aluminum, that's even more reason to at least practice with wood!
If you are going to spend $85 on a bat, buy a composite wood bat. They wont break and will save you money in the long run.
But, you did say cheapest? I would just go to the your local Sporting goods store.. they usually have bats around $25-35. I have been using one of those all year and luckily it hasn't broke on me. When it does I am buying a composite.
