Why are starting ptchers put under a " pitch count " these days?

Question:What is it? Are they afraid these guys are gonna " break like some flimsy toy or something "? I started following baseball back in the 60's and it wasn't that way then. I tell ya, it seems everybody's afraid of everything, anymore. Oh, and yes, there were relief pitchers back then. So, l don't see where that would be a legitimate argument. Thanks.

Whats a MIckey Mantel Autograph Baseball worth?

Because today's coddled divas get "hurt" at the slightest provocation. Eighty-nine pitches = OK. Ninety pitches = Oops! Rotator cuff injury.
Then again, if I were paying these guys' multi-million dollar salaries, I'd probably pack each player in cotton between games.
PS - We know starting pitchers get used less today, but remember when relief pitchers pitched 100+ innings a year? Now a guy picthes 75 games but totals only 35 innings. Yipes.

Has there ever been 4 back to back homers in mlb history?

Because if you throw too much your arm gets tired and you lose command, and risk injury

Who did trot nixon get traded to ?

pitch counts have been used for a long time, but not to the extent they are in todays game. in past years, pitch counts were used primarly for pitchers coming back from injury to ease them back in.

in todays game, teams are especially careful with all pitchers primarily because of high salaries and guaranteed contracts. teams have far too much invested in players to take any risks that might shorten a players career.

Is Albert Pujols on Steroids?

I think a lot of the problem is the way they are treated when they are younger. Guys don't go out and throw everyday at the park and stuff like they used to. With all the AAU teams and all that stuff they aren't able to just play like all of the old guys and strengthen their arm. Couple this lack of arm strenght with flawed mechanics and you get a lot of injuries. The thought with pitch counts is that they will help prevent these injuries which is somewhat true. Once a guy gets to that level where they have MLB type talent its too late in their development to make up for the mistakes that happened when they were at little league age.

Is Anyone else as happy as I am?

pitching mechanics have changed since then. back then you could throw a complete game having little arm fatigue just as hard as pros now who can't make it through 7 innings and then they need 4-5 days rest.

so yeah, pitchers back then use their whole bodies to throw the ball instead of just their arm. so basically... most pitchers throw just with their arms now so they have a limit.

i wish there were more instructors now that teach "old school" pitching... i'm telling you it helped me a lot.

You Yankee fans ready to lose another three?

Why don't major league pitchers apologize for hitting the batters that they face?

there paid so much money its a huge investment, so you protect your investment.and relief pitchers are also paid big bucks, not to set on the bench.you don't want a hitter facing same pitcher 4 or 5 times after he is tiring with a fresh arm in the bullpin.

Rice Owls contenders or pretenders?

so they dont ruin their arms, the Cubs should try it, ie. Wood, Prior, etc.
