Ash.NEVER pine which is a very soft wood!! Anyone who has a fireplace and burns wood knows pine is NOT a hard wood. It would never be used for bats. Some may be thinking od pine tar which is a sticky substance used on bats to make them less apt to slip out of the batter's hand.
