Domestic Abuse..What is a sports team responsibility?
Question:A Seattle Mariners pitcher was arrested in NY for biting,choking, and giving his wife a black eye. Then in the media(Seattle) police were called last week to his residence for choking his wife. Seattle Mariners opted him to Triple A, and he has asked for "help".
Should the team disban him for hitting his wife? What is a teams responsibility in this situation?

I think the best thing for a team to do when an athlete commits a crime is to let the law runs its course.Julio Mateo needs some sort of help to fix his marriage and himself. Getting him out of the Mariner clubhouse was a smart move on the team's part, so he won't be a distraction. If he is guilty and is sentenced to jail, the team should let it happen, and not interfere. If it hurts his career, TS--he should've thought about that earlier, huh?
Of course, in America, since so many are basically found "not guilty by reason of extreme wealth," Mateo will probably get off scott-free, anyway.
I hope the Mariners release him.
The same as any corporation. Help somone who wants help, but have an internal policy about whether or not they continue to work while getting that help.
I despise this as much as you do but the fact is that he was arrested and charged, but has not been tried and has not pleaded this charge out and been sentenced. Unless and until that happens, he can't be released for this.
However, domestic violence is frequently tied directly to substance abuse, including both alcohol and steroids. It's not just up to a given team, but up to MLB and all sports to develop education programs and policies that deal with both issues, simultaneously.

In theory "yes" but in practice team spirit and ability depends on key players as well as the outcome of meetings with the player and management.An athlete's true value to a team, contract obligations and the the athlete's personal problems could provide good reasons for providing some alternative that releasing them from a contract in the short term. The difficulty comes with how much you can tell the supporters of a team and how much is corporate and intimate personal information.
A professional team's responsibility is to provide an income for it's owners and entertainment for it's supporters. Part of that entertainment is success and role models so athletes are treated a little different from other organizations where the employees are hidden behind a corporate logo.
