He only makes diving catches because he is too slow to get there on time. He is also terrible at reading the ball off the bat.

Maybe not "the" most overrated, but he's right up there. When you consider he has not even been an average defensive center fielder the past five years and they give him a gold glove every year. I would say that pretty well defines being overrated.In his entire career he has only had one very good defensive year and one other good one.

Andruw Jones range factor last year ranked #68 among ALL major league OF. His "centerfield RF of 2.61 was the same as 39 YO "rightfielder" Reggie Sanders. A centerfielders RF nornally runs .5 to .6 higher than corner outfielders.

Overrated? I don't think so. I am not an Andruw Jones fan at all but I hae to give respect where it is due. He has 9 straight gold gloves to back up his play. He also has one of the best arms in the game, how many people do you see trying to take an extra bas on him? my point exactly.With 9 consecutive Golden Gloves, and a tenth on the way, how can he possibly be overrated? The guy has 28 PO in 29 CH this season. Last season he had 378 Put Outs in 429 Chances, and only 2 errors...the guy has 42 errors in ten yrs.what more do you want him to do?

I do not think he is overrated but I do think that the Gold Glove award is. Gold Gloves are awards that are given to the player that is voted on by the managers as being the best defensively at his position. It uses no statistical values to determine the award, so, usually, a player that is on many highlight reels making top catches or plays will win the award. That whole question just proves you don't know what your talking about. First off Andruw plays more shallow than anyone in baseball. He is possibly the best CF out there at getting good reads off the bat. Andruw Jones is arguably one of the best center-fielders in history. One reason that you may "think" he's overrated is that he makes the catches look easy. He has the greatest jump on a ball after the hit which means instead of catching a pop fly on the run like many of the outfielders, he is sitting under it waiting for it to come down.As for the diving catches, take a look at the ground he covers when making those catches, and most of them are not pop flies, but line drives. His arm is and always has been one of the strongest in the MLB. No one tries to take the extra base on him or Francouer because of the canons they possess.
