Mickey Mantle was the greatest single talent the game has ever known. He was able to do on two terribly injured legs what 99% of the league could not do on two good legs. Even with his injuries he was the fastest man in baseball. He covered the mammoth Yankee Stadium center field better than anyone, even Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio hated Mantle because he knew Mantle was a better ball player. He had a rifle arm which base runners feared. Mantle was the greatest switch hitter in the history of the game and no one past or present could hit a ball as far as he could.It's no accident that during Mantle's 18 year career that the Yankees won 12 American League Pennants and 7 World Series Championships.

In my mind there is still one answer: George Herman "Babe" Ruth. I mean you are looking at a player who at one point was one of, if not the, best pitchers in MLB and then became the greatest batter in MLB.
More importantly its not too far out of line to say he saved the sport after the BlackSox scandal.

Roy Hobbs.Babe Ruth. Not only was he a great hitter, but the man was also a great pitcher. Before he went to the Yankees, he was the ace of the Red Sox pitching staff. Willie Mays is a close second. I wish I could of seen either one of these guys play.

Mickey Mantle: Personally he hit 536 home runs batted over .300 ten times won 3 MVP's and played in 20 all star games. In 1961 he and teammate Roger Maris chased Babe Ruth's home run record (60) Mantle suffered from an injury and had to sit out the last nine games and still finished with 54 home runs. Also as a teammate Mantle led the Yankees to 12 AL championships and 7 World Series Crowns. He would have put up much better numbers except for an accident during the 1st year of his career where he tripped on a sprinkler head in Yankee Stadium. This accident caused him to undergo 4 knee operations and shortened a great career that would have also included a player who had blazing speed.Pete Rose...forget the states and stories. The man went out and played the game with all his heart and soul. At the end of the game, you knew that Pete had left everything he had to give on the field.
