Wow, just watch a game and you will notice easily. Barry Bonds always has a can in his back pocket. Jake Peavy always has his lip packed. Check out Carlos Guillen's bulge in his cheek! If I had to guess a percentage, would it be too bold to say 75% chew?75, yeah way too bold.
First off to clarify when do you mean actual chew or are you including dip/snuff. Chewing tobacco will always have its place in baseball. Its honestly been part of the game since baseball first started and and sows no sign of slowing. Rules have been passed in from little league, Babe Ruth/Sandy colfax, High school, American legion, College, and the minor leagues that are were created to stop people from dipping or chewing and this doesnt seem to work. I play college ball and countless number of my team mates chew and we just know when we are allowed and when we arent (games and practices). But back to your question Yes alot of players chew in the MLB. Examples are Chipper Jones, Pig Pappa Ortiz, Nick Swisher, Bobby Crosby, Curt Shilling (used to dip before he found a lesion on his lip and quit due to cancer concearns) and many many more. I watch the A's games with quit a bit of frequency and at least 5 starters on the in the field chew along with most of thier bullpen. Thier Gm billy bean is an avid dipper (copehagen is his personal snuff of choice). I can watch any game and find dippers on both teams but nobody talks about this anymore its baseball dirty litlle secret and people are more than happy to help keep it quiet. a good way to tell look at thier front lip if its extended out more than usual then most likely thier dipping.
I know Chris Duncan does.
