Question:How can a pitcher pitch 6-7 innings with no runs and not get the save when his team wins the game? Verlander pitched for the Tigers against Baltimore on Wednesday and after 6 or 7 innings when they changed pitchers the score was tied 0-0, and stayed that way til the 12th inning when the tigers got a grand slam. Why didn't Verlander get a win for that game?

because he wasnt the last pitcher on the mound for the winning team or wasnt in the game when the runs were scoredHe didn't get a win because they didn't take the lead while he was pitching. Instead of Verlander getting a win, the Tigers' relief pitcher got a save.
The pitcher who gets the win is the pitcher who last pitched for that team when they won the game.
If the score is 0-0 when a pitcher leaves the game, he can't get the win unless he left after the half of an inning and his team scored in the next half inning before they had another pitcher throw for them.

for a pitcher to get a win, his team needs the lead when he exits the game, no lead, or if the team loses the lead, no win for the starting pitcherWhat do you think about the gary thorne/curt schilling/bloody sock issue?
A starter gets a win if he pitches at least 5 complete innings, leaves the game with the lead, and his team retains the lead until the end of the game. A starter gets a loss if he leaves a game with his team losing and his team loses the game without drawing even. There's no minimum inning requirement for a loss but 5 innings are required for a win. In either case it doesn't matter if the pitcher leaves the game with the score 1-0 and the final score is 12-11, as long as the team in the lead keeps the lead through the rest of the game. There are rare exceptions where the where these requirements were met and the official scorekeeper gave the win or loss to a different pitcher, but in nearly all of those cases the league later overturned that ruling. No lead, no win and no loss.As far as the save, a pitcher has to enter a game with his team in the lead and the tying run able to reach the on deck circle before the end of the game. No lead, no save.
