Question:He's played whiffle ball forever, but now he's joining the school baseball team. He's great in the field, but the bat feels heavy to him. How can I get him used to using a real bat?

Prob the best way is hitting off a tee, maybe try a lighter bat. FYI, now he is playing hard ball, time to cut off whiffle ball activities, whiffle balls are not too friendly on the arm when throwing. Hit a bucket of balls off the tee, then perhaps some slow pitches to him with the same bucket of balls. Most important thing for him, don't overthink it. just make contact, thats the focus. Have fun, it all falls into placeOk yesterday in the Giants vs. Diamondbacks game...?
You have to put in time with the boy. I probably throw my son a hundred pitches a day and I hate it. He loves it and is better than most kids his age. (6) I disagree with the other poster saying to stop with the whiffle ball. Its great for eye hand coordination when it isn't convenient for a real baseball. He just has to work with a real bat to get used to the added weight. Why do you think that in the last 60+ years no batter has hit over .400?
Teach him now, while he is young to switch hit. It is much easier for a kid his age to pick up those little things that frustrate teenagers. Worrying about mechanics and those things are useless because his body hasnt even come close to developing, so his form will change as he grows anyway. For now work on eye-hand coordination, not being afraid of the ball, and how to hit the cut-off man. What does the baseball player give up for his bat?
-put a tire up in the back yard-have him hit thru it till hes tired every day-hold the bat out straigh armed with one hand (left hand if he hits right handed).. if he can hold it for 5 sec straight, its
the right bat, if not lighter. i would say, 7 year old maybe
27 in, 15 ounce good start..
-soft toss is the key.. get a portable net or multi sport net,
bucket of balls and sit at 45 degree angle and throw to his
front of plate a ton of balls.. he will get stronger..
-the whole soft toss thing is key b/c a still head and getting
used to make contact is the first step, just like hitting thru
the tire..
-THEN mabye in 2-3 weeks take him to the field and pitch..
you'll see an improvement. work in gradual steps..
Fleer 1990 and donross 1989 full untouched decks, what are they worth?
Right now it is just about getting comfortable with this new bat. He just needs to get as many swings in as possible, and that will come along. But at the same time, you need to get him into a good hitting position, so he doesn't pick up bad habits that could remain with him forever.Hands need to be in proper place and he needs to be in a balanced stance. It is much easier to show than tell. But with hands. Take a look at most of the major leagers hands. They are up and in. Many hitters use a technique where they tap their shoulder prior to getting into hitting position. This allows the hitter to get his hands into proper positions. As for feet, he should be balanced with bent knees. Experiment with what is comfortable. The most important thing right now is to get him stepping towards the pitcher and not third base.
How many runs will Tim Wakefield give up today?
Keep it fun, don't drill him on every little thing he does. He'll get discouraged and want to give up you do'nt want that. Keep it basic glove to the ground, eye on the ball and at that age alot of kids have a fear of the baseball hitting them. After he gets hit with it a few times he'll either develop faster reflexes for avoiding the ball or he'll realize that pain is only temporary and encourage him to get back up again. After all he is only seven, so make sure he's playing becuase he wants to and just because he thinks his parents want him to. Make goals for him, make adeal with him, such as if he gets so many hits this year or makes so many outs or catches or whatever you will reward him with something at the end of the season. That he has more encentive to stay motivated and stick with it. That instills in him at an early age that you need to earn what you get.Who is the greatest catcher of all-time?
Be patient! I'm trying to help my brother, but you have to be patient. Just gradually increase the weight by getting more bats. You could probably barrow them from someone.More Questions & Answers...
