Roger Clemens: Late-Season Hero or Selfish Media Whore?
Question:I personally can't stand the way he 'retires' every year so he can drive up his price and only show up when it's convenient for him. I think he also likes special treatment because he's a first ballot HOF'er. And shame on the Yanks (if they have any)for giving him $28,000,000 to create a media circus in New York and maybe win a few games. I wish all the MLB teams would just tell him to stick it since he'll just bail on them at the end of the season anyway. What do you guys think?

He's a juicer and a prima dona. It's bad enough he's acting this way to get too much money out of the richest team in baseball, but it was even worse the way he did it for two years to his hometown team that he professed to care so much about. Add on to that the fact that they had to set aside his salary at the beginning of the year, just in case he decided to play.Look at his stat line for an average of how he does over 20 starts (about how many he should get this year). He gets 10 wins. Now let's take an average # of starts of about 30-32. That's 15-16 wins over a season. How many other guys who average that make $28 million per year? He simply isn't worth it, but knows how to bleed a team for the money.

Could be both.I do not think Clemens is a selfish media whore as you say, but I do agree with you that the Yankees should not have signed him, much less to a $28m contract. I am a Yankees fan personally and was hoping that he would not sign with them. I personally would rather see the spot go to one of the developing talents that are truly the future of the ball club.
It does get old with him "retiring" every year and wanting the preferential treatment he gets. He is a great pitcher and deserves his place in the HoF, but he should not be given any better treatment than anyone else who shows up to the park everyday to do their job.
That said, now that they have signed him, I hope he is worth the Yankees once again, selling their soul for.

I hate what Clemens is doing, but it's free market capitalism at it's best and I'm all for that. If any one of us was among the top 5% in the history of our profession we'd be in demand enough to get whatever we asked for. When Clemens proves he can no longer perform at a high level, he won't get the $$$ anymore. Supply and demand. Econ 101. Personally, I hope Clemens crashes and burns, but that's because I'm a Yankee hater and I love to see Steinbrenner, Cashman and the whole organization throw more money at an aging, crippled and mediocre pitching staff. First thing; don’t get mad at Clemens for accepting 28 million dollars. I don’t even know you but I am willing to bet my bottom dollar to say you would accept it to so don’t blame Clemens for the money he is being offered. Second thing; Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers to ever stand on a baseball mound and in my opinion he is worth every penny.
