How is a Pitchers ERA calculated?

Question:simple straight forward question.

Answers:

Will Roger Clemens sign with the Yankees, Red Sox or Astros?

These two previous answers are technically right, but strange mathematically in approach.

ERA is earned runs per nine innings, right? So the best way to find that logically is:

1. Divide Earned Runs by Innings Pitched (this gives you earned runs per inning)
2. Multiply this total by nine (to give you the total per nine innings)

The other approaches are conceptually strange because they get away from the point of the ERA - why would you multiply the runs!? (Although again, they are correct)

How much of a chance do the Rockies have of winning the NL West?

Multiply the total number of earned runs by 9 and divide the result by the total innings pitched.
Say Randy Johnson has allowed 67 runs in 220 innings pitched. Multiply 67 (total earned runs allowed) by 9: 67 x 9 = 603. Divide 603 by 220 (total innings pitched): 603/220. His ERA would be 2.74
