I recommend kellysultimatesports.com or softballfans.com for honest bat reviews. Now, here's my candid opinion: For ASA, which use .44/375 balls, the Miken Freak 100mph is by far the best bat (legal for this sanction until 1 Jan 08). Other bats that will give you "pop" are the Worth Mayhem (98, M7, and Jeff Hall models). Also, the DeMarini EVO Ax is a great bat (especially for the stated "mush" ball). Aluminum - I love the Anderson RocketTech. Read what I wrote (Greg Garza) about this bat at http://www.andersonbat.com/rktck_test.as... This is the the 05 model, but I now swing the 06 model, which is hotter, and the 07 is even hotter than the 06.For USSSA sanction play, since they use a higher compression ball (.47/525), I would go with the Easton Synergy+ or Synergy 2. Easton's new line, Stealth, is also hot. I'd also recommend the Miken Freak or Freak Plus. Worth PST is a great aluminum ball, especially for cold-weather play.
Rolling a bat is an accelerated process for "breaking in" a bat. It breaks in a bat evenly and prolongs the life of your composite bat. You can use a roller for bending tubes, to roll your bat but I suggest you have someone who knows what they are doing perform the process. Or you can use a woodworkers vice. Again, let someone else do the job for you. This last process takes a little longer to perform, but it beats having to do BP with 200+ cuts.
Avoid shaving your bat. It makes your bat hot, yes, but you severly shortens the life of your bat. Plus, it's illegal in all sanctions. If you are discovered, you could be banned from your league. Also, you void your warranty and the bat manufacturer will set their legal pit bulls on you so quickly. If you don't believe me, read some of the articles on the ASA Website. It's not worth it.
