What's the call? Safe, Out, or Return to Third?
Question:I was umpiring 2nite & ran into an unusal play with the 9/10 year olds. The runner from third was stealing home (ok in this league) and the catcher, pitcher, and third baseman went to make a play. The pitcher ended up half way between third and home, in the basepath, causing the runner to go out of the basepath to avoid the pitcher.
Normally if a baserunner runs out of the basepath he is out. However, is this interference by the pitcher? Should the baserunner be called safe or out?

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox?
If the pitcher has the ball and is attempting to make a tag, and the runner goes 3 feet away from a straight line between where he is at and the base to which he is advancing (Home) it is an out for leaving the baseline. If the pitcher does not have the ball nor is receiving the ball, and the runner is forced wide to avoid him it is obstruction and the runner is awarded home. Score the run.
The baseline is not directly between the bases as many people think. It only comes into play when the runner is being tagged and it is a direct line from where he is when the defense begins to attempt to tag him and the base towards which he is running.
Which Young MLB Star Has The Brighest Future?
Any player that runs off of the base path is out. It doesn't matter if the pitcher applies the tag.runner should be safe same thing happened in my little brothers league when a runner was at first the ball was hit to the wall the umpire got into the runners way the runner was thrown out at home. the umps had a talk and awarded him third taking away the out.
Are you saying the pitcher ran from the mound to the basepath? Or did he throw it to the catcher+3B first?
If he didn't, then the runner is out.
did he avoid the pitcher because he was trying to tag him? If so batter out. If the pitcher did not have ball and wasnt really involved in play and runner just ran out to avoid the collison, then he should not be out for running out of base path. Was the runner ever tagged? If he was tagged because he avoided a collision with the pitcher (who didnt have the ball), I would say he is safe, interference on pitcher.
Do you think the Brewers will choke and not make the playoffs?
the runner is safe in that situation third 2 home run scores interference on the pitcherDivision realignment: what happened?
A baseline is the direct route—a straight line— between two adjacent bases, though it is not drawn in chalk or paint on the field (though foul lines are drawn). The basepath is the region within three feet (0.9 meters) of the baseline. Baserunners are not required to run in this objective basepath, however; a baserunner may run wherever he wants when no play is being attempted on him. At the moment the defense begins to attempt a tag on him, his running baseline is established as a direct line from his current position to the base which he is trying for. The runner may not stray three feet away from this line in an attempt to avoid a tag; if he does, he is automatically out.Which sports athtlete can adapt to any sport and become an all star type player?
As you describe it, it sounds as though the pitcher obstructed the runner, unless the pitcher was fielding a throw. You don't mention whether the pitcher was fielding a throw, so I'll assume he wasn't. Point to the infraction, declare "That's obstruction," call "time," and award the runner home because a play was being made on him. If there are any other runners, award or return them to the bases you think they would have reached had you not needed to kill the play.
Please note that defensive interference occurs only when the defense impedes the batter's opportunity to hit a pitch. Impeding a runner's progress is obstruction.
You need to supply more information.
If the pitcher had the ball and ready to make a tag the runner is out for the 3' rule.
If the Pitcher did not have the ball at the time you have obstruction (not interference) and you should call time and award the runner home because a play was being made or attempted on him.
Name a pitcher, who in his 1st Major League @ bat hit a home run as a pinch hitter?
Depending on how close the pitcher was to the runner then it could be called interference. If the baserunner was deliberately running out of the basepath and it wasn't even close then the runner is out. If you call interference then the runner is awarded home plate.More Questions & Answers...
