If the game is on the line and a single wins it and I could have any player in history at the plate.I'd take Ty CobbIf the game is on the line and I need a homer to win it and I could have any player in history at the plate.I'd take the Babe.
If i need someone who can get on and steal a couple of bases...Rickey Henderson.
If it's October.Reggie Jackson.
There's no wrong answer, any of the hitters named the answers I read would be a great choice.
Do you think MLB should have the Rickey Henderson award and/or the Nolan Ryan award?
It's Babe Ruth all the way.Ted Williams, I can accept, Ty Cobb, sure.
Just so you know, Ty Cobb, owner of a .367 career average, Ruth his .342.
25 points is 25 points, but Ty Cobb wasn't the one that realize that they can't get you out if you hit it into the stands.
Oh, and to the person that mentioned if the game is on the line in October, then Reggie Jackson. How many octobers do you think he actually did that? I think it's one.
Pete Rose had a career batting average of .303, he had NO speed, NO power, he had great bat control, walked at an ok rate and he bet on baseball like no one else.
But no way in hell is he even in the same class as 'the best'
You can't mention any active players going now, they are simply all too similar. Good yes, but not great compared to everyone else they are playing with and if you include one, you must include them all.
The last Great batter was Rickey Henderson. He affected the game like no one else in his generation.
I'll take Ted Williams in a whisker-thin finish over Ruth and That Guy In SF So Many Love To Hate.
Carry a box of animal crackers with you. When you encounter a vocal Bonds hater, give him a cookie.
Would you blame me if I said that I'm still not over the Cubs losing the 2003 NLCS?
I don't think there is any way to narrow such a long historical list of prolific hitters down to just one name. Here's a list of who I think the 10 best hitters all time are (in no particular order):
"The Georgia Peach" Ty Cobb
Ted "The Thumper" Williams
"Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio
"The Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig
Willie "Say Hey Kid" Mays
Willie "Big Mac" McCovey
"The Sultan of Swat" Babe Ruth
"Charlie Hustle" Pete Rose
Alex Rodriguez
"Stan the Man" Musial
Honorable mention:
Albert Pujols
Ichiro
"Man of Steel" Rickey Henderson
Eddie Murray
"Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks
Mickey "The Mick" Mantle
"Mr. October" Reggie Jackson
Tony Gwynn
