First, it is the 2B that plays between 1B and 2B, and baseball is not about fairness in the sense of where the fielders are in the field. It is about making the out. So, if a hitter (lefty) is known to be a pull hitter (hits constantly to the right side of the infield), often times the shortstop moves on top of the second base and the 3B moves close to the SS position.I have seen in really close games that the LF moves close to the infield, given the defensive team in essence five infielders. You can get burned that way if the batter is capable of hitting it to left field where there is nobody playing, so it is rarely done, but it happens.

You have the corners covered by the 1st and 3rd basemen, and then the 2B and SS are covering the space inbetween and depending on which side of the field the ball is hit, the opposite player will cover 2nd base (so hit on the right side, SS will cover 2nd base; if hit on the left side, 2B will cover 2nd base), and the player on that side will either attempt to make a play, or if it's in the outfield, act as the relay.
