it's not burnt..it's pine tar, a sticky substance that batters use to keep the bat from flying out of their hands. when he adjust his helmet in between pitches some of the pine tar transfers from his glove to his helmet, making it look like it melted.That may be his "lucky" helmet, which he will not part with.

Many players use pine tar to get a better grip on the bat, so if Manny has it all over his helmet, I'm guessing he pushes his helmet down tighter a lot during his at bat. Jose Guillen was always my favorite for that kind of thing. I don't know about anymore, but it used to be he'd let so much pine tar build up that you couldn't see the logo on the front of the helmet.I think the more important question is whether or not there is a rule about it at all, such as uniform cleanliness, being able to see the team logo, thickness allowed, etc.
