What exactly causes tommy john surgery? im confused.?

Question:alot of young powerful pitchers throw in the upper 90s, close to 100, but end up being out for the entire season because they "blew" their arm out.

what exactly does that mean? i've seen alot of young pitchers who throw hard have elbow problems, rotator cuff, tommy john.

does it mean you cant throw too hard too much when you are young? hopefully this isnt what king felix is about to be going through. i know that kerry wood went through it.

thank you for your time.

It's not a tendon, it's a ligament in your elbow that gets replaced because it becomes severely damaged, usually from the stresses of throwing a baseball. Tommy John was not the first person to perform the surgery but the first pitcher to successfully have the operation. Recovery takes a full year and whether or not the pitcher is successful in the recovery has to do obviously with the outcome of the surgery, but also the confidence they have in their arm that they can throw aggressively and not be scared to re-injur themselves.

Basically the tendon in your arm snaps. They take a tendon from another part of your body and place it in the damaged area. This procedure was first done by Tommy John, hence the name of the surgery.

It's something that just happens to your arm when it's overused, or you could be completely healthy and it just happens.

Tommy John surgery, just as with any surgery, is caused by an MD who specialized in a branch of surgery.

The surgery referred to as Tommy John surgery is a way to rebuild an elbow when a ligament has been torn. A tendon is removed from the opposite wrist and is basically wrapped around the ends of the bones in the elbow, using a figure-eight shape.

This surgery was originally developed to help to strengthen the joints of polio survivors. Dr Frank Jobe tried it on Tommy John when John tore the ligament in his pitching elbow. Both the surgical techniques and the rehab routines have improved dramatically since then, so John's 18-month rehab is now down to a year or less for a pitcher, and less than that for some position players.

Tearing a ligament in the Arm; it can happen to anyone regardless of how hard they throw. It is usually caused by throwing to many breaking pitches and or overuse of the arm. They take a ligament out the non pitching arm and use it to repair the "torn" one.
