Larry Doby was the first black player in the American League, the second black major league ballplayer. Elston Howard was a Yankees catcher, and the first black Yankee. Doby was an All-Star player in the Negro Leagues with the Newark Eagles, and then was an All-Star in the majors with the Indians. He was elected to the Hall in '98 by the veterans committee. Howard was the AL MVP in '63, won two gold gloves, and played in 10 world series. He also played in the Negro leagues initially, for three seasons before signing with the Yankees, and was a teammate with Ernie Banks while with the Kansas City Monarchs.Larry Doby was the first black to play in the American League. He came into baseball just after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. He is a lot "Buzz" Aldrin, second man on the moon. Everyone remembers Neil Armstrong but people have to think twice about "Buzz".
Larry Doby's road was just a difficult as Jackie Robinson. He had to put up with the same hatred. However Robinson seems to get all the credit and nearly everyone forgets that Larry Doby had to endure the same thing. Doby was a great player as his stats will show and he too was elected into the hall of fame. It is also worthwhile to know that Doby was the second black ever to manage in the major leagues. Frank Robinson was the first.
Elston Howard was the first black player to play for the New York Yankees. Extremely underrated, Howard was a great athlete and could have played any sport he wanted. Howard followed Yogi Berra as the Yankees catcher and had an outstanding major league career and actually won an AL MVP award in 1963. He was well liked and respected by all his team mates.
Larry Doby was the first African American baseball player in the American league for the Cleveland Indians.
Elston Howard took over as catcher of the New York Yankees from Yogi Berra. He was the 1963 most valuable player in the American league, and the first African American player for the New York Yankees.
