My 12yr old is starting to pitch for her softball team. What can I do to help her get better?
Question:I have no idea on what techniques she needs to be practicing to be a better softball pitcher. Please advise!!

I am a pitcher myself and I take lessons at Grease lightning Pitching Academy twice a month. Some of the drills i do are wrist snaps, full motion drills, step and slides, i work out with wieghts (2 - 5lbs.) three times a week. for the wrist snaps get a softie softball ( made for pitching drills) and practice snapping your wrist against a brick wall. full motion drills are when you go through your pitch without a ball. Step and slide drills are when you put your arms behind your back and and practice striding as far as you can. This builds up leg muscles. For a while i did not do my drills and one week i did drills everyday and gained almost 5mph.if you have the money, get her a coach. Nothing you can do but either play catch with her so she can practice. Ask older girls who pitch to help her with her technique

Talk to her coach and see if he/she can show you the techniques she should practice. The picthing motion is simply a series of smaller technical motions. If you can learn them you can watch her practice them one at a time and make sure she is doing them right. If you ever watch older girls practice pitching, they practice each individule motion seperately and then put them all together in a pitch. I think that is the way to go. Slow pitch is a fluid movement. Usually a large step off the mound with a long slow swing of the arm up. Bend at the knees in a natural way. Almost like doing a big lunge, just not going down with the knee so far. Release the ball when the arm gets to about thigh level on the up swing. The hardest thing to gauge is the arc, and this will only come with PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. At first her main concern should be control, then technique.It will become a natural feel for her, it is not a power thing. If it is slow pitch, power will not matter.. I played girls/womens softball all positions for 23 years.

Hire a pitching coach, or get her into some kind of pitching clinic. You could also try talking to some of the other parents of the other teams that she plays and ask them for advice (as in what instructor they use, ... some instructors might do a group discount, or if they've taken their daughters to certain clinic's).Oh, you might also try searching the web for instructional video's. Might be cheaper than an instructor or clinic.

Absolutely, positively do not let her throw anything but a regular fastball. A young girl, or any child for that matter, that age can do irreparable damage to their arm / wrist / shoulder trying to throw "junk" pitches. Work on nothing but fastball and location of the pitch. She will be fine. If she gets sore use lots of ice and keep her pitch count to a minimum every week.More Questions & Answers...
