The Twins seem to be left out when it comes to talking about the 2006 AL Central.Everyone talked about how big of a surprise Detroit was and how shocking it was to see them in the World Series.People forget the Tigers to the wild card and the Twins took the division.The Twins made very few moves in the offseason going by the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it".Since they have lost Radke and Liriano many people believe they don't have a shot ,but they are wrong.Who has won the Central 4 out of the last 5 years?The Twins.
The Twins hitting looks to be great this year,and all that great hitting is lead by Joe Mauer.He had his breakout season last year and took the AL batting crown along with 13 hr and 84 rbi's just at age 23.Justin Morneau is just 25 and had his name being metioned with the word MVP.He had a stellar season last year .321 with 34 hr and 130 rbi's.The rest of the lineup isn't shabby either.Luis Castillo will provide the speed while Bartlett,Hunter and Punto all are decent hitters.
Castillo-Hits for average not power.Very fast(.296 BA,3 HR,49 RBI)
Nick Punto-Good fielder and decent hitter.Very litte power.Bats for a good average.(.290 BA,1 HR,45 RBI)
Joe Mauer-Either the best or 2nd best catcher in the game.Excellent contact hitter,hits for average and some power.Great defensive catcher.(.347 BA,13 HR,84 RBI)
Michael Cuddyer-Okay hitter.Strikes out a lot but can hit for power.Excellt fielder.(,284 BA,24 HR,109 RBI)
Justin Morneau-Outstanding hitter.Can hit for power and average.Not a great defense first basemen but he gets the job done.(.324 BA,34 HR,130 RBI)
Torii Hunter-Strikes out a lot.Ok average hitter with a little pop.the best defensice CF in the game.(.278 BA,31 HR,98 RBI)
Rondell White-Not as good as he once was.Struggles to hit for average or even any power.A mediocre fielder.(.246 BA,7 HR,38 RBI)
Jason Kubel-Young hitter.Has power but not great average.Awful fielder.(.246 BA,8 HR,26 RBI)
Jason Bartlett-Had a decent 2006.Batted over .300 and showed some speed.One of the better fielding SS.(.309 BA,2 HR,32 RBI)
The starting pitching, on paper, appears to be weak but in reality it isn't.Santana is the best pitcher in the game today and can strike out any player in the game.Bonser can hold up the #2 spot and Sliva just needs to learn how to handle lefties before he becomes one of the better pitchers in the league.Matt Garza is a good prospect with great velocity.Glen Perkins will hold the #5 spot and will improve this year.The bullpen is , in my opinion , the best in the game.Joe Nathan and Juan Rincon shut down any offense in the 8th and 9th innings.The missing left handed specialist was found in Dennys Reyes who has a 0.71 era against left handers.The middle relief pitchers are also strong with Pat Neshek who posted a 2.19 era last year.
Overall outlook:The Twins are still the best team in the division even with Liriano or Radke.They will win it for the 5th time in 6 years.
