Pujols. There are plenty of good fantasy baseball players, but here are the best of the best in terms of position:
C - Joe Mauer : High average, up and coming power, good plate discipline. Expect at least .310 average, 20 HR, 80 RBI
1B- Albert Pujols : Hands down the best 1B, maybe the best player in the game. Has had at least 100 runs, 30 HRs, 100 RBI since his rookie season. A lock to hit in the .320-.330 range. You cannot undersetimate that type of consistency.
2B- Chase Utley : Cream of the crop. One of the few 2B who will approach 100 R, 30 HR, 100 RBI. Second base is typically a power deficient position, so getting those kind of numbers out of your 2B gives you an advantage.
3B- David Wright: A lot of good third baseman, some of whom may end up having better numbers than Wright. However, he is entrenched in a very deep and talented Mets lineup that will provide him protection no matter what spot he hits in. Most likely, he will be hitting second or third, which gives him a lot of RBI opportunities. Anticipate .300, 25-30 HR, 100-120 RBI.
SS- Derek Jeter: Again, there are some talented shortstops out there, but in fantasy baseball, nothing is more important than consistency. Hits second in the Yankees lineup, which is a modern day version of Murderer's Row. Expect an average of at least .290, 100 R, 15-20 HRs, 80-90 RBI, 20+ stolen bases.
OF- Grady Sizemore: A good combination of speed and power. Expect at the very least, 20 HR/20 SBs, 100 R.
OF- Vladimir Guerrero: One of the more consistent outfielders out there, he has never hit below .300 in his career. Though he toils in a relatively weak lineup and doesn't steal as much as he used to, he gets good stats no matter what. Expect .300, 30-40 HR, 100-120 RBI. He is money when it comes to outfielders.
OF- Alfonso Soriano: While he won't win you a batting title, he is, like Sizemore, a compelling blend of speed and power. He was a member of the 40/40 club. Though he will probably hit around .275, he is hitting in one of the friendliest ballparks in Wrigley Field, as well as a strong lineup. He won't give you as many RBI as Guerrero since he leads off, but expect at least 35-40 HR, with 35-40 steals.
SP: Johan Santana. Best pitcher in baseball, hands down. No need to reel off his stats.
RP: Joe Nathan: Ditto.
Granted, there is no way that you will assemble a team that even remotely resembles what I've written on here. But should you get 2 of these players, you are already in good shape.
Good luck!
Will Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run this year?
Locke is wrong about a few of the players he mentioned. He is completely off when talking about shortstop and outfield.Jeter had a career year last year, and he was arguably a better MVP candidate than Justin Morneau, but he will likely not repeat those numbers, and he wasn't even the best shortstop last year. Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, Jimmy Rollins, and Miguel Tejada are all likely to be better than Jeter this year, and all will come cheaper (either less auction money or a lower draft pick), except for Reyes. Jeter is good, but he's perennially overrated and not really worth the trouble when you're assembling a fantasy team.
His outfield picks are completely wrong.
Alfonso Soriano got much of his value from being eligible at second base. Now that he's not, he's not as good as his reputation, especially since his current reputation is built on his 2006 season more than his career as a whole. While he's always been a pretty good fantasy player, he likely will not approach 40-40 land again, and so he's probably going to go too high in nearly every draft. I'd rather use my first round pick on someone else.
Grady Sizemore is good, but he's not quite first round material yet.
The best outfielder in the game didn't even show up in his post--Carl Crawford. Crawford is just entering his prime, and he will hit plenty of home runs and steal 50-60 bases.
Another dominant outfielder who was not mentioned is Carlos Beltran, who has power to spare but can still steal bases. Beltran is the anchor of a very good Mets offense, so he will get plenty of opportunities for RBIs.
Lance Berkman is still eligible at outfield this year, and he may be even better than Vladimir Guerrero, though he doesn't steal as many bases. He has a lot more power, though.
David Wright is a very good third baseman, and he has more speed than any reasonable competitors at the position, but it's hard to ignore the pure power of Miguel Cabrera, who is still eligible at third base this year. I'd give him the nod over Wright in most fantasy formats. Of course, this completely ignores a guy named Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod's floor is higher than David Wright's ceiling this year. A-Rod was better last year despite supposedly having a down year. He beats all other third basemen, including Cabrera, by a long shot.
McCann is likely the best catcher available, but catchers are a waste of money. Even the Brian McCanns, Joe Mauers, and Victor Martinezs of the world aren't so much better than their competitors that they are worth the high price tag. I'll let someone else draft McCann in the 4th round or spend $20 on him, and I'll just take the only slightly less good A.J. Pierzynski at the end of the draft.
When it comes to fantasy baseball, real baseball, and all other forms of baseball, Albert Pujols is a god. No one can approach his level of dominance right now, except possibly Alex Rodriguez.
Utley is the best second baseman, hands down.
The best pitchers right now are Johan Santana and a few others, but it's usually not worth it to spend resources on top pitchers. There are so many pitchers out there that it is usually possible to build a pretty good staff made up of free agents. I prefer to use my early picks on good offensive players. If I have to take a pitcher early, I'll take someone like Jake Peavy, who will have an excellent ERA and WHIP and will strike out a ton of people. If I need another pitcher, I might consider a top closer, since they tend to help your team's strikeout totals and ERA.
