Given their division, I'd say their prospects of reaching the playoffs are very good, the first step to even thinking about a World Series. The Phillies dug themselves an early hole, the Braves cannot keep playing at such a high level, Florida is still young and has no bullpen, while Washington, well.THe question then is can they get through the playoffs to reach the World Series. With Milwaukee looking pretty strong and St. Louis and Houston lagging due to poor starts and lousy pitching, it looks the Brewers in the Central. The Dodgers would be the only team to worry about in the West. Any team that can lineup three great starters in the playoffs with the likes of Penny, Schmidt and Lowe is usually very tough to beat. The Mets do have decent pitching but really need to get healthy before they can be considered as a legitimate contender. Glavine is not going to last forever, Pedro is at best a 5-6 inning, 75-80 pitch guy at this point. Wagner is a beast when he's on but he is known to have the injury bug also.
Their offense is among the best in either league, especially now that Wright is hitting. Reyes is an absolute monster, while Delgado continues to just produce. I see them making a move to pick up one more bat, or perhaps giving Milledge a try. Lo Duca is not the answer at catcher, despite his .300 average. Cleveland is looking to move Victor Martinez due to his below average defense, and I think that he would be an excellent pickup for the Mets. Plus, the Mets have in their farm system, precisely what the Indians seek...young pitching.
All in all, the Mets have a very good chance of making the NLCS. It will be a tough matchup with the Dodgers, most likely, but they should be able to pull it out as they have a better run-producing capability despite the difference in the top 3 starters. The question then becomes about the AL opponent. Boston, Detroit and LAA will likely win the divisions, with the Yanks pulling out the wildcard. The Halos should knock out the Yanks, (costing Torre his job no less) while the Tigers eek past the Sox in 7 as Boston's lack of a bullpen gets exposed. The Tigers then beat the Angels, setting up a NYM v DET series. We'll see a preview of that series in a few weeks during interleague play, so stay tuned!
