Question:Bases loaded. Runner on first. Two outs, one and one count. The pitcher throws strike two, the catcher thinks it is strike 3 and rolls the ball back to the mound. The runner on first abandons first base and heads to his dugout (third base). He reaches the pitchers mound and retreats to first base. The runner on third has already scored. A play is made on him but he is standing on the bag. The coach's argue that he went out of the baseline and is out, even though no play was made on him while he was out of the base path. Is the runner out?

It depends on if the runner from third scored before what the umps deem as the runner on first stepping out of the base path. The runner on first is out regardless, because any time you step out of the base path (3 feet on either side of the perpendicular between any two consecutive bases) you're automatically out, but there would be some arguements as to whether or not the run counts. Let's say the guy on third, aware that the count was only 1-2 and not a strikeout, breaks from third as fast as he can and scores before the guy on first gets too far from first base(the 3 feet that he's allowed): let's say he's about 1.5 to 2 feet away from first. The manager of the batting team has a legit arguement, saying that the runner scored before the guy on first was technically out. What is the difference between a breaking pitch and a change-up?
Hes safeWhat has been going on with the Astros?
If the umpire deems he is abandoning his effort to advance on the basepaths then he is out and the run can only score if the runner from third has touched home before the out is declared. Not a force play, just a time play. No infraction of leaving the basepath because he is not in the midst of being tagged.
