i think the yankees, red sox, and mets get too much attention on espn. THE SOX CUBS ALL THE WAY. in chicago, the cubs are the northside (stereotypically whiter fans, more upper-class, nicer neighborhood, fan favorite, games are always packed no matter what) and the sox are the southside (stereotypically darker fans, working-class, "crappier" neighborhood - though not true, and attendance depends on performance more). plus the jewelbox ballpark of wrigley field and wrigleyville fratboy hood contrasts with the more gritty US cellular field (which replaced comiskey park in the early 1990s) and the bridgeport neighborhood, which is more tough -- and surrounded by acres of parking where rowdy sox fans tailgate.
the sox are seen as the chicagoland underdog, although this is starting to change since they won the 2005 series and the cubs haven't had one in 100 years. both teams have historically struggled to win but both are historically decent teams.
in all, this makes for a much more interesting baseball rivalry versus the yankees (the ultimate dynasty money-machine) and the mets (a mediocre 1960s expansion franchise). it's true that NY baseball fans had the many times to watch two NY teams play each other in the world series (most recently the mets vs. yanks in 2000), but chicago fans also had this experience way back in 1906, the first city to achieve such a feat.
all city comparisons aside, in terms of baseball, gimme a break: it's all about the crosstown classic series (also known as the red line series) in chicago.
