David Wright HR - Sat. May 19th?
Question:If you saw the Yanks/Mets game, or at least the highlights...
David Wright's second HR of the game, which may or may not have gone out anyway, hit off the palm of Johnny Damon's glove and went over the wall. Can someone tell me why that is considered a HR, and not an error on Damon. Not taking anything away from Wright, but it hit Damon's glove, should have been catchable, so it should have been an error shouldn't it?
Answers:
it'd be kinda like seeing Ozzie Smith make a diving play on a line-drive and then see him drop it as he hits the ground and calling it an error...I'd be more in support of turning a passed ball into an error on the catcher if it results in a runner moving up...by calling it a passed ball instead of a wild pitch we're admitting that it was a catchable ball and that the catcher screwed it up (and if a runner moves up, obviously the other team benefits)
don't forget that each play is left up to the official scorer's judgment too...on any sort of close judgment call, he's always going to give the break to his home team
ScarletCub, I have to give you a thumbs down for this reason: A passed ball cannot be a passed ball unless a runner moves up a base. Sorry
