On September 3, 2007, a ball was hit to jose reyes and he feilded it cleanly and threw it to first. Hanley Rameirez's speed made it an extremely close play at first. Jefferey Loria hated the call, stormed out of the box and down to the feild to argue the call with the umpire, James McDougle. Joe Girardi told Loria to 'shut up' and said that it would hurt the team. On October 3, 2006, the Marlins announced that they had fired Girardi, presumably because of his rift with Loria. At first, Girardi was thought to be among the leading candidates to replace Yankee manager Joe Torre after a bitter postseason loss, but Torre remained with the Yankees. He was also a candidate for the Chicago Cubs manager position, interviewing for the position just days after leaving the Marlins. With his playing experience in Chicago, he was considered a front-runner for the position even before the season was over. However, the Cubs chose to go with veteran manager Lou Piniella. Girardi took himself out of the running for the Washington Nationals managerial job shortly thereafter and will return to the broadcast booth for the YES network in 2007. Girardi was fired because he told the Marlins' owner, Jeffrey Loria to be quiet because Loria was yelling at an umpire from behind the Marlins dugout. Girardi said that Loria's yelling at the ump would hurt the Marlins, and he was probably right.
Too bad, Girardi was one of the reasons why the Marlins did well with such a young team last season. Loria is a jerk, flat out. His only goal is to collect money from baseball and make a profit. His team is secondary. Fortunately, baseball writers recognized the great job Girardi did with the Marlins in '06.
All he did was put his boss in his place. Still deserved manager of the year though.
