Would oldtime ball players make it in todays media frenzy?
Question:Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were alcoholics and Ty Cobb killed a guy. Most of them were beyond racist as exemplified by stories you hear about guys playing with and against Jackie Robinson. I am so sick of hearing how todays athletes are whiny and don't hold a candle to our past athletes in terms of character. These guys are put under huge microscopes on a daily basis!

Just wondering if someone could let me know what WHIP is?
Yesterday's ballplayers were not different than today's. For every alcoholic in the "old days", there's a cocaine user or worse today. People are people whatever their time period. There were also players of great character in the old days as well. Rube Waddell once saved a teammates life after a serious head injury by carrying the player out of the ballpark on his shoulders, flagged down a passing carriage for a lift to a hospital, and stayed at the player's bedside all night. Several members of the New York Giants in the early 1900s were late to a game when they stopped to help rescue people from a burning tenement, climbing ladders and carrying the injured down to safety.PS - Ty Cobb never killed anybody. Check the news reports for the incident in 1912 when Cobb fought off a group of muggers.
Thank you. Is it different for Lefty's?
Of course, look at Ray Lewis. What was the longest home run you ever saw?
Players havent changed. The media has. In the old days they would overlook misconduct, and not report it. They also didnt attack a player for not talking to them. Today players like Cobb and Ruth would be ridiculed and run out of town by the press, simply for not wanting to deal with them. If you want an example look at the difference between McGwire and Bonds. The media knew they both used steroids. But McGwire kissed there butts so he was allowed to get his record. He wasnt attacked till after he retired.Did it ever happen in baseball history where a pitcher lost a no-hitter?
Yesterday's athletes spent twice as much time, learning, practicing and thinking about baseball than today's overpaid so-called stars.Remember, they would have had advanced weight training, better diets and film available to study their swings. Bringing their talents and work habits to the ballpark, not the exceptions but the vast majority, would have outworked, outhustled, outthought and out achieved their part-time counterparts.
The three men you singled out for criticisms probably deserve it; but they're in the Hall of Fame for being the best. Scrutiny by incompetent and silly media hacks and micro-interfering owners makes the tough fight harder.
And these guys wanted to win, more than recent ballplayers want to win.
That's why they learned more skills; and that's why they would excel.
Yes they definitely would! I think they actually cared about the game more! They worked hard to make themselves better! The players today only put out the year when their contract is up, get a big contract, and then are on the DL all the time or don't put out! The old players definitely have problems but at least they cared about the game!
Who's the early season #1 contenders & pretenders?
Something tells me the press would have let the antics of Ruth and Mantle slide. I mean, no one accused them of cheeating on aynone but themselves. Ty Cobb never killed a guy, but would have been massacred, and probably regularly suspended, for his bad behavior.Who was the mlb player to hit 13 home runs the fastest at the beginning of a season?
There would be a lot more "Journalists and TV pundits" visiting hospital ER's that's for sure.More Questions & Answers...
