What is this fascination with Nolan Ryan? Mere numbers?

Question:He was a thrower for much of his career, and pitched mostly for loser teams. It seems if he had really been as great as a lot of people think, that one of the big market teams would have acquired him along the way. His win/loss percentage was nothing special, and he had a ton of walks to go with those Ks. There were also a lot of pitchers in his day that were better than he was.
I think he's overrated--what do you think?

Any cubs or white sox player will make all star team?

I would agree that he is overrated. Many rank him among the all-time greats I believe because of his fastball, his no-hitters and his longevity. He certainly was amazing. The value of his baseball cards kind of indicates how much he is revered. But as you say, his W-L record and his ERA (some seasons) weren't as dominating as you would expect. It is true to a certain extent that for most of his career, he played for mediocre teams. That could be a legitimate reason why his W-L record wasn't better. I guess I can see the arguments either way.

Why is it more difficult to pitch out of "the stretch" in Baseball?

I think he is slightly, but he is still a hall of fame pitcher.

Who is the MLB thirdbase player whose brother is a sportscaster?

It might be the fact that he could throw in the 100 mph range for nearly the whole game and he had 7 no-hitters, still a MLB record. He's definitely not overrated.

Milwakee vs. Florida postponed?

im not saying anything against him cause there will never be some one with that many no hitters again

Will the sale price of the Cubs top $100?

It's how he DESTROYED Robin Ventura in a fist fight. But to be fair, Ventura reall ran head first into that head lock. Not much of a fight.

Yeah.. 7 No-Hitters should make anyone's jaw drop.

If you had to bat against him I know that your opinion would be different.

What Recorder do u think will never be broken?

Nolan Ryan was always effectively wild. When he is on he was unhittable, note the 7 no hitters. But he is probably helped a bit by the dead ball era and raised mounds.

Omar Vizquel,hall of fame?

His win/loss percentage was nothing special but that's a function of what you said in your first sentence, that he pitched mostly for loser teams. I guess he was happy playing in his home state of Texas which is why he didn't go and sign with a big market team.

But seven no-hitters is seven no-hitters. Nobody else in history had more than three. So I don't see how he can be called overrated.

What is the name of the song derek jeter uses for his second at bat?

He is a little overrated in some ways. No Cy Youngs, very limited postseason, a lackluster winning %. Although I think MLB batters who faced him would laugh at any thought of him being overrated.

*jasonpickles.they lowered the mounds in 1969, at the dawn of Nolan Ryan's career. And the dead ball era is generally considered 1900-1920...so you're way off there.

Who hits more triples in Major League Baseball - left handed batters or right handed batters?

He was on terrible teams, but that was because he wasn't used the right way in New York. He took a backseat to Seaver, Koosman, and Matlack. When he got to California, he was the ace, and pitched that way. Anyone knows when you throw as hard as he does, you have less control over the baseball. The best control pitchers throw in the low 90s or less. The reason why he didn't go to a "big market" club is that he wanted to stay near his home in Texas. The no-hitters and strikeouts are impressive, but more than that is the amount of innings he pitched, and the age he pitched until. He kept himself in good shape, because he didn't spend much time on the DL. Especially after he turned 40. Yes, there were better pitchers in his time, but he was great too.

Little league rule for not playing a player in a game ? child plays in the LL magers?

you said it. he played for bad team, and his win loss isn't that great. of course it's not. he played on bad teams.
7 no hitters? c'mon man. he pitched two of those in his 40's. yea, we all know how great unit and rocket and maddux are, but only unit has pitched a nono in his 40's (perfect game too). career strikeout leader. and a not too shabby ERA. imagine if he was on better teams. all those k's and love ERA, he could have won 400 games.
and on top of all that, he gave us one of baseball's greatest beatdowns when he headlocked robin ventura and turned his face into a bloody mess. ventura was half of his age at the time and he still kicked his butt. the best part was, ryan stayed in the game and pitched with ventura's blood smeared all over his jersey. google that pick, it's a classic.
