They do it because by complaining about the Yankees payroll, it hides the fact that theirs are high also. In Boston's case, it hides the fact that the Yankees payroll went down about $15 million last year to about $180 million, while Boston's is $145 million (according to Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy). Also, with Pettitte, Mussina, Rivera, and Posada in the last year of their contracts, they will either be brought back at lesser rates, or not be brought back at all, as there are younger guys coming up, which will drop it even further.These payroll haters are idiots. What are the Yankees supposed to do with the money, give it away? Do you know what is really ridiculous? The Florida Marlins made the biggest profit last season because they received $15 MILLION in luxury tax and $35 MILLION in revenue sharing. They made $43 million, which means they would have lost money had they not received money from other teams, mainly the Yankees. You don't hear that though.

brettj666's your analogy makes no sense. There is no salary cap in baseball. Every team in baseball (even the Twins) can spend what the Yankees spend on players. The owners choose to keep the profits instead of putting it back into their team like the Yankees do. The Yankees contribute to the Twins payroll because they spend so much on payroll. Jeter, Posada, Cabrera, Rivera, and Cano came from the Yankees farm system. Do you suggest they let these players go to save money? That's stupid!
