How do they decide who gets the Win and Loss in a MLB game?
Question:If you could treat the twins vs detroit 1st game of their series as an example that would be great. I thought for sure Ortiz would get the win as he pitched 6.0 Innings for 5 Hits and 2 ER, but somehow Crain got it and he only pitched 1.0 Innings for 2 Hits and 1 ER.
I think i get how Zumaya got the Loss for Detroit as he only pitched 0.2 Innings for 3 Hits and 2 ER which is worse than Roberston cos he pitched 7.0 Innings for 3 ER.
I dont get how they work it all out?! Can someone explain please?

What do Ebbets Field and Fenway Park have in common?
since Minnesota was losing when Ortiz came out of the game, there is no way he can get the win. when Crain came in the game the team got into the lead and keep it. therefore, crain got the win becuz he was pitching when the Minnesota Twins pulled ahead and took the lead. it all depends on who was pitching when a team is winning or lossing. hope that helps you Rhyan C. Good Luck with your fantasy team.Do you think that Roberto Clemente's number should be retired?
say if the game is tied or the team is losing, a rp comes in and does what ever, the team bats and gets the lead and holds it till the end of the game he wins, Now say he comes in and the Team is losing or tied and gives up some runs and the team ends up losing, he loses unless the team ties the game or leads after him and then some 1 else could give up some runs and take the LossUsing the toronto game as an example, didnt watch the game but suppose this is what happened, ortiz leaves and crain gives up a run, twins get up and zumya gives up runs and the twins hold the lead until the end of the game= Crain WIns because they got the lead after he pitched
A starting pitcher gets the win if he pitches at least 5 full innings, leaves the game with his team in the league, and the bullpen doesn't allow the opposition to tie the score.
If a starting pitchers leaves with his team in the lead but doesn't pitch at least 5 full innings, and the bullpen retains the league, the official scorer has the option to decide which relief pitcher is the winner. That W is to go to the pitcher deemed by the official scorer to have been the most effective pitcher.
If at any time the game is tied, the pitcher of record for the win is the pitcher who last threw a pitch for the time that takes and keeps the lead, when that final lead was taken.
It 10.01 of the rulebook.
Official Cal Ripkin T-ball Rules?
if the pitcher is in taken out of the game and his team still has the lead, then if they win he gets the win. if the pitcher is pulled from a game when his team is losing, then he doesnt get the win. The releiving pitcher would have to get the lead back in order to get the win otherwise if the team loses, the starting pitcher gets the loss.I dont know about the game ur talking about but i will give you an example.
lets say that Jeff Suppan is pitching 6 innings and his team has the lead when he is benched. if his releiver comes in and they win, then Suppan gets the win because he had the lead and its up the the releiver to keep it that way
If the team was losing while suppan was pitching, and the team came back to win the game with the releiver, then the releiver gets the win because he earned it not Suppan.
Now lets say that the team is winning while suppan is in the game and the releiver comes in and the team loses the game.. the releiver would get the loss because it was his pitching that gave away the runs scored by the opposing team. Suppan would earn nothing.
i hope that made sense. Its kinda hard to explain
An example of how this works.
Ortiz pitched 6 innings for the Twins and the score was after 6 innings was Twins 3 Tigers 2.
Crain comes in and pitches the 7th and 8th innings. In the meantime the Tigers scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning
and the score after 7 1/2 innings is Tigers 4 Twins3.
Robertson pitched 6 innings and he was relieved by Zumaya and he holds the Twins scoreless in the 7th but the Twins were able to get 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and at the end of 8 innings the score is Twins 5 Tigers 4.
The pitchers of record are Crain and Zumaya because the Tigers 2 runs in the 8th took the possible win away from Ortiz and the 2 runs the Twins scored in the bottom of the 8th made Zumaya the pitcher of record. In the 9th Nathan gets the Tigers out and the Twins win 5-4.
Crain is the winner because the Twins took the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning when he was still officially the pitcher of record and Zumaya is the loser because he lost the lead and gave up the 2 runs that put the Twins ahead for good. Nathan would get the save.
I hope that will help you .
Ok im a big fan of the NL Centeral, and I was jst wondering how will win fisrt in that division?
if the sox are playing the yanks ... schilling pitched 6 innings, mussina pitched 6 innings ... game tied 2-2. papelbon comes in adn ortiz hits a homer, 2-3. lets say teh game is decided in a 2-3 result. papelbon gets the win, and the reliever who came in for mussina gets teh loss. moose and schillign get no decisions. Is the downfall of the yankees the fault of steinbrenner? or the GM, CASHMAN?
If Crain was on the pitcher of record when the team took the lead, he gets the win. It doesn't matter how long he was in the game.More Questions & Answers...
